Learning the Marathi Plural is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Marathi language. But first we need to know what the role of Plural is in the structure of the grammar in Marathi.
Marathi Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.
While in English, the plural is formed by adding (s) to the singular. In Marathi, plurals are based on gender but there will always be lot of exceptions to the rules below.
Here are some examples:
a) For feminine nouns we convert end of the word to (-i), (-a) or (-ya). Pronoun or verb used is also converted to (-ya) at the end of word.
Majhi Maitrin (my girlfriend) becomes: Majhya maitrini (my girlfriends)
Bayako (wife) becomes: bayaka (wives)
Stri (woman) becomes: Striya
b) For masculine nouns remain the same but (-e) is added to pronouns.
Majha mitra (my friend) becomes: Majhe mitra (my friends)
Purush (man) becomes: Purush (men)
c) Third person genders refer to ‘still things’ in Marathi. When referring to multiple things, end of the word is converted (-e) or (-ya).
Pela (glass) becomes: Pele (glasses)
He majhi lal gadi aahe (this is my red car) becomes: Hya majhya lal gadya aahet (these are my red cars)
