Learning the Belarusian Adjectives is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Belarusian language. But first we need to know what the role of Adjectives is in the structure of the grammar in Belarusian.
Belarusian Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence.
While in English an adjective doesn’t change when the noun changes, in Belarusian an adjective should agree in gender, case, and number with the noun. For example:
a) Masculine to feminine to neutral example:
Гэта мой маленькi сын (this is my little son) - Гэта мая маленькая дачка (this is my little daughter) – Гэта мае маленькае шчаня (this is my little puppy)
As you can see from the example above, the adjective, as well as the possessive pronoun comes before the noun and also takes the feminine form.
b) Singular to plural example:
Гэта мая белая машина (this is my white cat) becomes: Гэта мае белыя машыны (these are my white cats).
As you can see from the example above, the adjective and the possessive pronoun come before the noun and also take the plural form. The plural form of adjectives is the same for all genders, only varying according to cases.
