Uzbek Negation
Learning the Uzbek Negation is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Uzbek language. But first we need to know what the role of Negation is in the structure of the grammar in Uzbek.
Uzbek negation is the process that turns an affirmative statement (I am happy) into its opposite denial (I am not happy).
Grammar Tips:
In Uzbek,
negation can be made in two different ways:
1) by adding
suffix –ma to the verb (qilmaysan, ko’rmaganman – you don’t do, I haven’t seen). This suffix is only
used when it is the action that is being denied (I did not speak to him – Men u
bilan gaplashmadim).
2) by using
the word emas (sometimes along with the
personal endings). In this case denial is referred to other words than the
verb. (mushuk emas – not a cat; Men ishchi emasman – I am not a worker). Unlike in
English, double negative is widely used in Uzbek:
I
have nothing – Menda xech narsa yo’q.
