Learning the Lithuanian Adjectives displayed below is vital to the language. Lithuanian Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence.
While in English an adjective doesn’t change when the noun changes, in Lithuanian an adjective should agree in gender and number with the noun. For example:
a) Masculine to feminine example:
Čia mano mažas sūnus (this is my little son) – becomes -- Čia mano maža duktė (this is my little daughter)
As you can see from the example above, the adjective takes the feminine form.
b) Singular to plural example:
Masculine: Čia mano baltas katinas (this is my white cat (male)) – becomes – Čia mano balti katinai (these are my white cats (male)).
Feminine: Čia mano balta katė (this is my white cat (female)) – becomes – Čia mano baltos katės (these are my white cats (female)).
As you can see from the example above, the adjective takes the plural form and keeps gender of noun.
For adjective in Lithuanian we have third gender - neuter:
baltas katinas, balta katė, visa yra balta (everything is white). You can see feminine and neuter form looks the same, but it reads different. In feminine form accent is on the ending bal-‘ta, and in neuter in the root: ‘bal-ta (we have something like long “ah” sound in the root).
