Latin Adjectives

Learning the Latin Adjectives is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Latin language. But first we need to know what the role of Adjectives is in the structure of the grammar in Latin.

Latin Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence.

Grammar Tips:

While in English an adjective doesn’t change when the noun changes, in Latin an adjective should agree in gender and number with the noun. For example:

a.                   Masculine to feminine example:
Hic meus fīlius parvus est. (this is my little son) becomes: Haec mea fīlia parva est. (this is my little daughter)

As you can see from the example above, the adjective takes the feminine form.  Because the case of the adjective matches the noun it modifies, word order is not necessarily important in Latin.  Typically the verb will be at the end of the sentence with the subject close by.

  1. Singular to plural example:
Haec mea blanca rosa est (this is my white rose) becomes: Hae meae blancae rosae sunt. (these are my white roses)

As you can see from the example above, the adjective takes the plural form.

Here are some examples:
