In Latvian all nouns are either masculine or feminine. For example: vīrietis (man), sieviete (woman), māsa (sister), brālis (brother).
Some masculine words (usually professions) can be changed into feminine, simply by removing the masculine ending (– s) and adding a vowel (-a or –e). For example:
