Turkish Negation
Learning the Turkish Negation is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you practice the subject, the closer you get to mastering the Turkish language. But first we need to know what the role of Negation is in the structure of the grammar in Turkish.
Turkish negation is the process that turns an affirmative statement (I am happy) into its opposite denial (I am not happy).
Grammar Tips:
In Turkish,
negation can be made by adding suffix “–me, (-ma)” to the end of a
verb. We use negation suffixes after the verb but before the time suffixes. If
you want to make a noun negative, you must use “değil” at the end of the
sentence.
Examples:
O
gelecek yıl Lonra’ya gitmeyecek. means He/She wont’t go to London next
year.
Şu öğrenci benim öğrencim değil. means That student
isn’t my student.
Here are some examples:
| English Negation | Turkish Negation |
| Negation | Olumsuzluk |
| he is not here | O burada değil |
| that is not my book | bu benim kitabım değil |
| do not enter | girmeyin |
As you can see from the example above, the structure of the Negation in Turkish has a logical pattern. Locate the Negation above and see how it works with the rest of the sentence in Turkish.
