Learning the Welsh Verbs displayed below is vital to the language. Welsh verbs are words that convey action (bring, read, walk, run), or a state of being (exist, stand). In most languages a verb may agree with the person, gender, and/or number of some of its arguments, such as its subject, or object.
- Present Tense
In Welsh, verbs take the following endings to form the present tense:
-af, -i, -aiff, -wn, -wch, -an
After these terminations are added forms of the personal pronoun. For example:
canaf i = I sing; cani di = you sing; canaiff e/hi = he/she sings; canwn ni = we sing; canwch chi = you (plural) sing; canan nhw = they sing.
*** Please note that we almost always use the long forms of the verb for the Present Tense. For example:
Rydw i’n canu = I sing/I’m singing; rwyt ti’n canu = you’re singing; mae e’n/hi’n canu = he/she is singing; rydyn ni’n canu = we’re singing; rydych chi’n canu = you (plural) are singing; maen nhw’n canu = they’re singing.
- Past Tense
In Welsh as well as in English the simple past tense (pretorite) is used to describe past events. The endings for the past tense verbs are:
-ais i; -aist ti; -odd e/hi; -on ni; -och chi; -on nhw. For example:
Gwelais i = I saw; gwelaist ti = you saw; gwelodd e/hi = he/she saw; gwelson ni = we saw; gwelsoch chi = you (plural) saw; gwelson nhw = they saw.
Please note the insertion of the ‘s‘ in the plural forms – one of the anomalies of th Welsh language.
Please note that there is no definite rule to find the stem in Welsh. Sometimes it’s the whole verb-noun (for example ‚‘edrych‘ = to look and edrychais i = I looked). Sometimes you drop the last syllable (for example, cerdded = to walk and cerddais i = I walked. You just have to learn each stem as it comes up.
- Future Tense
To form the future in Welsh it’s very easy, just use the Present Tense terminations or (as is now commonly the case) use the long forms of the verb. For example:
Bydda i’n mynd = I’ll go ; byddi di’n mynd = you’ll go ; bydd e’n/hi’n mynd = he/she’ll go ; byddwn ni’n mynd = we’ll go ; byddwch chi’n mynd = you (plural) will go ; byddan nhw’n mynd = they’ll go.
This means that you don’t have to worry about the stem of a verb.
