Welsh Articles

Learning the Welsh Articles displayed below is vital to the language. Welsh articles are words that combine with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. Generally articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun. Examples are "the, a, and an".

Grammar Tips:

Definite Article:

Unlike English, which has only one definite article “the", Welsh has 3 forms of the definite article:

‘y’ before consonants (y ci = the dog)

‘yr’ before vowels (yr oren = the orange)

‘ ‘r ‘ after vowels (i’r plant = to/for the children)

Indefinite Article:

While we have (a / an / some) in English as indefinite articles, there is no indefinite article in Welsh .

‘Some’ can be translated by ‘rhai’ if it means ‘a few’ (rhai pethau = some things), or ‘peth’ if it means ‘a small amount’ (peth llaeth = a small amount of milk).
