Lithuanian Plural

Learning the Lithuanian Plural displayed below is vital to the language. Lithuanian Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.

Grammar Tips:

In English, the plural is formed by adding (-s) to the singular. In Lithuanian, to form the plural of nouns and adjectives we add different flexions (-s) to word stem. Gramatical rules are more complicated comparing to English or Spain. Here are some examples:

Draugas (a friend) – becomes -- draugai (some friends)

Moteris (one woman) – becomes -- moterys (some women), vaikas (kid) – vaikai, pušis (pine tree) – pušys, ranka (arm) – rankos, sūnus (son) – sūnūs, duktė (daughter) – dukterys, akmuo (stone) – akmenys. (You can see how relates flexion in singular and plural form.)

Štai mano raudonas automobilis (this is my red car) – becomes -- Štai mano raudoni automobiliai. (these are my red cars).

Miške auga tas medis (in a forest there grows the tree) -- Miškuose auga tie medžiai (in a forests there grows those trees)

There are in Lithuanian some Nouns which do not change its category of number: it uses as only Singular or as only Plural Noun.

For example:

Only singular: meilė (love), drąsa (courage), many nouns for naming materials, like cukrus (sugar), auksas (gold), etc.

Only plural: durys (door, doors), derybos (negotiation), dažai (paint), etc.
