Hungarian Negation
Learning the Hungarian Negation is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you practice the subject, the closer you get to mastering the Hungarian language. But first we need to know what the role of Negation is in the structure of the grammar in Hungarian.
Hungarian negation is the process that turns an affirmative statement (I am happy) into its opposite denial (I am not happy).
Grammar Tips:
In Hungarian,
negation can be made simply by placing "nem" before the main
verb. The double negative is frequently used.
Ernő
olvas = Ernő is reading – Ernő nem olvas = Ernő is not reading
Sokat
játszunk = we play a lot – Nem játszunk sokat = we do not play much
Elment
= (s)he left – Nem ment el = (s)he did not leave
Mi
mindenre nem gondolt! = Literally: What all (s)he did not think of; meaning:
(s)he prepared very meticulously/carefully
Mit
nem adnék érte! = Literally: What all I would not give for it! meaning: I would
be prepared to pay almost any price for it
Addig
jár a korsó a kútra, míg el nem törik. = Literally: The pitcher goes so long to
the well, until it does not break; meaning: don’t push your luck!
Ez
nem semmi! = Literally: this is not nothing; meaning: Vow!/This is very
interesting (or special or difficult).
