Catalan Feminine

Learning the Catalan Feminine displayed below is vital to the language. Catalan feminine refers to female qualities attributed specifically to women and girls or things considered feminine. The complement to feminine is masculine.

Grammar Tips:

To form a feminine word from the masculine in Catalan, you simply add (-a) if the word ends in a consonant. But if a word ends in a vowel then you need to remove the vowel before adding the “a”. Here are some examples:

Fill (son) becomes: Filla (daughter), alumne (student masc.) becomes: Alumna (student fem.)

Note that some words cannot change into feminine; instead a whole new word should be used, example: Home (man), Dona (woman).
