Catalan Feminine
Learning the Catalan Feminine is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you practice the subject, the closer you get to mastering the Catalan language. But first we need to know what the role of Feminine is in the structure of the grammar in Catalan.
Catalan feminine refers to female qualities attributed specifically to women and girls or things considered feminine. The complement to feminine is masculine.
Grammar Tips:
To
form a feminine word from the
masculine in Catalan, you simply add (-a) if the word ends in a consonant. But if a word ends in a vowel
then you need to remove the vowel before adding the “a”. Here are some examples:
Fill
(son) becomes: Filla (daughter), alumne (student masc.) becomes: Alumna (student fem.)
Note
that some words cannot change into feminine; instead a whole new word should be
used, example: Home (man), Dona (woman).
Here are some examples:
| English Feminine | Catalan Feminine |
| Feminine | Femení |
| he is happy | ell és feliç |
| she is happy | ella és feliç |
| he is American | ell és americà |
